Fashion Is... Eclectic

Okay so I'm cheating a little bit. I wore this a while ago but I'm posting it anyway. I love combining staples from very different styles- it creates a fun unique look. Here, I combined a very yacht-like preppy look with a kind of indie-boho scarf. The shorts are very classic, white linen with a wide cuff. The sweater is an airy knit, perfect for summer, and I added a purple tank under. I liked the unusual color combination. The scarf was sort of random and last minute because the sweater felt bare without it. The busy, colorful print is a prefect contrast with the the plain pieces in the rest of the outfit and it makes it more interesting. For some reason I took of my shoes in this picture, but I was wearing gold ballet flats.

Fashion is... Simple.

This outfit is just about as simple as simple gets. Denim shorts, white top-- there's not much to it. I wore this to my friend's party by the lake and it worked perfectly; it was laid-back but still put together. The loose top a sailor shorts were easy to take on and off when wondering between the lake and picnic tables (mini cupcakes and fruit salad... yum!). I love how fresh and easy the top is, yet clean-cut enough to dress up. I could wear it with dark wash skinny jeans (to balance out the very loose fit) and metallic flats to go out. Even though I wouldn't be able to wear the bikini top underneath on a regular day, I loved the feminine touch it ads to the outfit. I love the girly embroidery on the top, which is something Betsey Johnson does so well. I love her attention to detail which makes her dresses so amazing, but clearly she doesn't stop there. In short, I love this swimsuit.

Fashion is... Neutral

So this outfit is composed of pretty basic pieces; a solid sweater, jeans, a tank, and flats. The key to making something so cookie cutter look unique is to wear pieces with unusual details-- look for 'eye candy'. The crocheted detailing on the sweater is perfect example of this. It keeps the outfit very natural looking without being boring. Another way to make a basic outfit interesting is by using unusual color combinations. I used very neutral colors in this one: beige, brown (flats) and dark wash denim. Pretty boring. I felt that the top needed a little bit of saturation, so I added an unexpected pop of purple underneath.  This is a perfect everyday outfit and it's easy to put on in the morning. It's really nothing more than what most people wear on a daily basis. A couple layered tops and jeans, easy right?

Fashion is... Lazy.

I was kind of excited when I saw an overcast sky when I woke up because that meant I got to break out my Uggs for the first time in months. Not exactly the way one imagines celebrating the first day of August, but why not? Plus I got to test drive my new favorite cardigan that I got for fall. It's absolutely perfect; it's baggy without swallowing me, it's the perfect shade of purple, and it's oh-so-comfy. It's kind of like wearing a big hug. It is, after all, the middle of summer so I felt I couldn't get away with long pants. I went with just the opposite, my short Nike spandex running shorts. Definitely not something I would wear outside of the house, but I figured I could make it work behind closed doors. Hopefully no unexpected visitors turn up today...

Fashion in the Sky

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."
